SOMO OIL MARKETING COMPANY
At the beginning of its establishment, the General Administration of Petroleum Marketing had connections with the President and Board of Directors of the National Oil Corporation (NOC). However, due to the nature of marketing business and the need for cautious and prompt decision-making, especially after the nationalization of petroleum, the General Administration of Petroleum Marketing had connections with the Secretariat of the Petroleum Affairs and Agreement Implementation Committee and granted its General Manager the necessary administrative powers, which later became known as the National Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO). In 1998, the company was renamed Petroleum Marketing Company (listed company) and registered with the "Company Registration Bureau" of the Iraqi Ministry of Trade. SOMO's business focus is on selling Iraqi crude oil and surplus petroleum products. However, due to the local demand for some petroleum products after 2003, SOMO's responsibility expanded to include importing specific petroleum products. Therefore, SOMO's task expanded to include importing petroleum products needed for local consumption in addition to selling Iraqi crude oil and surplus petroleum products.
